Chrome Weekend

Any time away from work is a good time, so the weekend was better than being at work. Unfortunately my wife was sick all weekend(still is.) She gave her boss a ride to work a couple days last week and her boss was getting over a vacation cold, and shared it with my wife. By Thursday her throat was scratchy and hurt. By Friday it firmly settled in her throat and was drinking hot honey water like it was going out of style. Saturday there was no denying it was a nasty cold, and had started going into her chest, complete with the crackly, painful cough. Sunday she didn’t want to do anything and was pretty much miserable. Monday she’s still feeling like crap.

Nothing worse than a summer cold, especially when the heat lets up and it’s quite lovely outside.

I made the most of it. Besides making sure she was comfortable or had what she needed I went to the movies with my daughter after work on Friday. We saw Backrooms. It’s definitely a very specific flavor of horror movie, but it’s a flavor I love. Stories about endless spaces like mazes that build themselves, emotional and mental baggage we carry with us, and the horror of getting lost in such a space is my kind of jam. If I’m thinking about a movie a few days after watching it, then I know it did what it was supposed to do. If you want monsters, slashers, or a narrative that is laid out for easy consumption this may not be your bag. If you like an engrossing story with interesting characters and things left open to interpretation then this might be for you.

Saturday morning I got up a little after 7am and went for a 4 mile walk before my dad came over for coffee. I even got the dog out for a lap when I got back. All in all I think I hit close to 8 miles on Saturday.

Since my wife was under the weather it was a low key day. She did feel good enough to go to the store with me, so we got groceries together and then headed home so she could nap. I watched a couple movies Saturday afternoon, Point Blank with Lee Marvin and then Whistle on Shudder. Point Blank was an interesting noir flick from 1967. John Boorman’s second film. It seemed very arty for its time. I dug it. Whistle felt like a cheap version of Final Destination. Had some interesting gore, but other than that it wasn’t great.

Made a deep dish pizza for dinner and we watched the Guy Ritchie movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. That was a great movie. Great action and humor. Kind of on par with the Guy Ritchie thing.

Sunday my wife binged Shrinking all day on Apple TV. I went to the Y around noon and worked out. Made cauliflower mac and cheese. It’s a veggie meal that we discovered during a trial run with Hello Fresh. I binged some of the Hannibal series(probably third time I’ve watched it) then I went to bed.

One other thing that happened this weekend was that our oldest and their partner adopted a cute as hell 6-year old pooch named Dottie. Please say hello to Dottie, as she joins their family with cute cat Gaea and a bunch of fish.

Hope your weekend was pleasant.

I took some photos on my Saturday morning walk and filtered them through black and white. They turned out pretty good.
