Today is the official start of my vacation. Off today and tomorrow, then all of next week. Our biggest plan on this vacation was heading down to Indianapolis tomorrow to hit a museum, visit our oldest, and then get some dinner at a Detroit-style pizza joint. My wife’s birthday is Monday, so you know cake and ice cream and all that. She bought herself a work table for her space downstairs. She’s in the process of making our 21-year old a quilt and this heavy duty, raisable table will help out tremendously for that. We even talked about going up to New Buffalo, MI next week to get some burgers at Redamak’s and then walk around the beach.
So of course, I’d get sick.
Started out Sunday. I woke up with what felt like the beginning of a head cold. Sinuses plugged and just that little tickle in my chest. You know the tickle, the one that says “Tread Wisely”. So I didn’t do much of anything on Sunday, other than watch movies and a couple shows. I didn’t feel awful, but I figured I’d just chill out and make sure I gave my body some rest.
Monday arrived and I was feeling pretty lousy. That sinus pressure was on another level. Half way through the morning at work I was seriously thinking about leaving early. The headache I had felt like my face was going to split in two. I did leave about an hour and fifteen minutes early, just so I could get home and take some meds. I was going with my son to look at a car for him. I didn’t want to go, but I told him I would and it was only about 10 minutes from our house. I called my dad at work and asked if he’d mind coming along. He’s the car guy. He knows what to look for and listen for when checking out a car. He said sure(thankfully.)
The car visit was fine, and when we got back home I changed into lounging clothes and watched some TV. Dinner was already in the crock pot so that was one less thing I had to do. I had the forethought to put in to have Tuesday off, and I’m glad I did. I woke up at 2am with a fever of 100.1. I took some Ibuprofen and laid back down on the couch. I went in and out for a couple hours and just got up eventually around 5am. Fever broke and I was feeling pretty decent most of the morning. So good that I thought I could run into the store and grab a couple things before my wife got home. But after my shower around 2pm that fever hit back again. I’d texted my boss Tuesday night and said I was going to have to take Wednesday off too since this fever was unrelenting.
Wednesday came and it was the same scenario. Fever hit me early morning, took some meds, and it broke. Then it came back again yesterday afternoon. I know when it’s back because all my muscles start hurting. I told my wife it kind of felt like Covid. So she said I should take a Covid test, which I did. That “C” line on the test strip popped up within 30 seconds.
Covid strikes again.
I told my wife I was at least relieved to know that that’s why I felt so awful. It felt like it was beyond the typical head cold/sinus pain. This was something a little more than that.
So now, I’m staying home on Friday and not going to Indy. My son and his girlfriend took the day off so they could go with us, so at least my wife isn’t driving alone. Since my symptoms started on Sunday, I’m thinking Saturday or Sunday will be when I don’t have to worry about spreading this to someone else. This morning is the first time in 3 days where I didn’t wake up with a fever in the middle of the night, so I’m taking that as a win. I’m hoping that I can resume vacation festivities by Monday of next week. And I’m hoping that my wife doesn’t get this. Or anyone else I’ve been around.
This is just typical, par for the course crap. Our vacation to Colorado last year was marred by stomach flu, awful weather, and an incredibly small air bnb. It always seems like something has to fall apart when we have vacation or plans. Hell, it’s not like we were asking for the moon this time around. Just a day trip to see our oldest, go to a museum, and eat some pizza. That’s not too much to ask of the universe, is it?
Oh well. I’m hoping I’m over the Covid hump and on my way to healing. No fever this morning feels like a good sign. I’m making the most of it by watching a lot of movies. I think I’ve watched at least 7 movies in two days. Watched The Taking of Pelham One Two Three for the first time, the 1974 version with Walter Matthau. Great flick with Robert Shaw as the leader of highjackers taking over a subway and holding passengers hostage. They don’t make ’em like that anymore. I’ll probably keep doing that today as well. Why not? Can’t go anywhere.
Okay, that’s enough of my bellyaching. I’m feeling better today, so I’m happy for that. And hopefully next week I can start enjoying the time off.

Ah shit not again.
I’ve had it twice, but only mild. I dread the heavy illness you’re talking about.
Feel better soon!

This is my 3rd dance with the Lady Covid. Monday and Tuesday were the worst of it. Fever is fine, so that’s good. I think I’m on the mend. Thanks Mike.

Fever gone, that’s a good sign.
You know you were one of the first people that I knew, who had Covid. If I remember you had to get your car serviced and that might have been how you picked it up? Man it’s been crap for you and Covid 😦

Yeah, that sounds accurate. It was November 2020. Version 1.0. Had it two years ago in March of 2023. That first one was the worst. Felt muscle aches and fatigue for 2 months afterward.
