Hello all. Monday has returned in record-breaking speed. Maybe the fastest Monday turnaround yet. I’m trying to decide if Monday arrived quicker back in school, or as an adult. I’m leaning towards adult. When you were in elementary school, or even middle and high school there were some weekends where it seemed to drag on forever. Usually they were the ones where you had no plans, or it was raining out and you had no plans. Those were the days when you older sibling took control of the television, so immediately after your last favorite cartoon of the morning ended the TV became their property. For me it was usually hearing This Week In Baseball or The Wide Wide World of Sports playing. That was my cue to disappear into my bedroom as I was not a sports kid(I’m not a sports adult as well.)
I was left to my own devices which meant if nothing was popping out of my oversized cabeza I was stunted in a weird sort of bored malaise. Nothing sounded fun, at least nothing that was readily available at my fingertips.
Those were Saturdays that seemed to drag.
I haven’t had a Saturday drag since I was probably in my mid-teens. And now as an adult on the downhill slope of middle age every moment of a weekend away from work is respected, appreciated, and adored with great love and admiration. Even chores are fun to me, which is why weekends never seem long enough. There’s not a moment that isn’t accounted for. No boredom. When you become a parent boredom is something that disappears like the dinosaurs, or $5 footlongs. There’s always some fresh new Hell or joy right around the corner. Even when they grow up to be adults the insanity of joy and fear and anxiety continue on, like fingernails growing on a dead body long after buried in their coffin. So there’s no chance of boredom spreading your weekend out.
Enjoy your weekend adults. I don’t want hear the word “bored” coming out of your mouth. I’ve got plenty of work for you if that’s the case.
Anyways, it was a pleasant weekend. I was feeling a little under the weather Saturday. I’m thinking it’s these extreme changes in weather. It was sunny and in the 50s throughout last week, then on Friday it was in the 30s and snowing. I had some congestion in my head and chest, so I medicined up with Robitussin and Mucinex.
Saturday morning I was still feeling congested but I headed up north with my best friend to Three Rivers for some quality meats and donuts at Bullseye Market. We had a great drive there and back with lots of great conversations. As we’ve gotten older these trips have taken the place of those Saturday nights when I’d head over and we’d drink way too much and regret it the next day. We’ve both just gotten tired of that kind of thing. We’re not the virile, stupid young men we once were. So we’ve replaced those nights with our morning drives to MI and the once in a while get together at his place for a movie and a little weed, followed by a meal and I’m home by 7pm.
It’s great getting older and figuring out that destroying our livers isn’t a cool thing to do. Glad we figured it out sooner rather than later.

I headed into Karma Records when I got back from MI and grabbed a couple jazz reissues I ordered, Joe Henderson’s Multiple and Hank Mobley’s Third Season. I spun both of those twice when I got home. If you’re a jazz head and you haven’t heard these you need to get them in your ears. Henderson’s Multiple is a staggeringly underappreciated record of post-bop and fusion beauty. Along with Henderson’s Power To The People, Multiple is a heady, groovy, funky trip.

And Hank Mobley’s Third Season is another fantastic record from Mobley. Recorded in ’67 but not released by Blue Note till 1980, it reflects Mobley’s classic bop style. Upbeat jazz in the spirit of Lee Morgan’s The Sidewinder or Hancock’s Takin’ Off.
Sunday it was so nice the wife and I decided to head into town for an outdoor walk. We walked the Beyer Trail which takes you through some wetlands around Pike Lake. We then took some sidewalks back to the Oakwood Cemetery and made our way back to the car. Nearly 4 miles later we made it back to the car and headed home. I thought I’d go out and clean up the front yard so I got the leaf blower out and cleared some small limbs and dead leaves. By the time I got back inside I was feeling pretty sore all over. Not like muscle usage kind of sore, but the kind that feels like a fever. I checked it and it was 99.4. Figured I’d take a shower and back into town for some deli ham and sub buns for ham subs for dinner. My wife and I did that and the whole time we were out I just felt crappy. Like I was beaten with a ball bat. Maybe not a aluminum one, but like a prop one that can still bruise if swung too hard.

We got back from town and I was running a fever of 100.2. I hit the Ibuprofen and sat in the chair for a bit. I made a sandwich and had it with some cottage cheese and some kettle chips. I felt much better, and the temp went down to 97.3. Laid down before 8pm and slept all night through. No fever today.

Monday is rolling long at a pretty decent pace. Hoping that’s a good omen. Hang in there. Hope the week treats you well, kiddos.
