My good friend Stephen, aka Sankofa, wrote, recorded, mixed, and mastered this amazing track with some help from EDS and Burnt Bakarak yesterday and dropped it this morning. Sankofa is one hell of an MC and thinker living in the Midwest with me. His tracks are thoughtful and provocative, while the beats are old school which I love. I’m old school. Or at least old. Besides being one hell of a rapper, Stephen is an educator, husband, and father. His words, he never minces with. His flow is exact and his words always hit the mark. He speaks truth to power, and always delivers thoughtful messages. “Killer Mike For President” is simple and to the point. Would I vote for Killer Mike? Hell yes I would.
I don’t have the vernacular to talk about hip hop all that much. I’m fairly new to being a fan, except for the couple Beastie Boys cassettes I bought in high school. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve found much to love in the world of hip hop. Madlib, J Dilla, Oddisee, MF Doom, A Tribe Called Quest, Killer Mike, and Run The Jewels to name a few. I can’t talk of flow, style, beat making and all the ingredients that go into a great rap song. But I know when I hear something that I like, and when it moves me. I suppose in art that’s all that really matters. Sankofa always moves me.
So if you haven’t heard Killer Mike’s amazing speech down in Atlanta then you should listen to that now, as that is the inspiration behind Sankofa’s new track. He heard the speech and felt compelled to write this song. It’s short and to the point, and hopefully will be Killer Mike’s campaign song eventually. Even if he doesn’t run, the sentiment is there.
Give the track a listen below. Download for free. Or if you drop some money in the tip jar Stephen will donate all the proceeds to a worthy cause. Be safe out there friends.
I would love to see Killer Mike be President or in any form of Government to help stop the divisiveness in this country! His objective and rational thoughts on sensitive topics are always calming, challenging and uniting all at the same time. I’m always left feeling grateful of him when I get to hear him weigh in!
