Gonna need a weekend for my weekend…

I do love doing things outside my house, I really do. Concerts, movies, dinner at a restaurant, even a visit at a pal’s house is great. Heading down south to see the kids? Sure. I just like those things spread out over different weekends, that’s all. Plans on Friday AND Saturday night? It’s a very rare occurrence. You know why? Because that’s how I like it to be.

It’s been an incredibly tiring week at work. Not mentally or anything like that, but physically. I’ve been running around nearly every day with all sort of things going on and I’m wearing lots of figurative hats in the process. After a week like that I like to have a quiet weekend where I can reboot and get prepared for whatever is coming the next week. That won’t happen this weekend, as we have a jam packed weekend full of hilarity…literally.

Tonight we’re heading to South Bend and taking my parents to see comedian Jim Gaffigan. Catching dinner at Bonefish Grill, then going to Notre Dame and seeing one of our favorite comedians. I’m excited for this, really. And dinner will be fantastic as well. Normally then Saturday would be chill out time, but not this weekend. We double booked and now have a show Saturday to go to in Grand Rapids. We’re seeing John Mulaney Live, with Pete Davidson and the guy that impersonates Trump on SNL.

I know I’m complaining about something I shouldn’t be complaining about here. Poor me, two events two days in a row. Boo hoo.

Listen, at heart I’m a homebody. I like to be home. Everything I love is there; my wife, one of my kids, my grandpuppy Celeste, and of course all my records, movies, paints, musical instruments, and a porch for morning coffee or an evening beer. I just like being at home. The occasional concert or comedy show? Sure, of course. But as I’ve gotten older crowds kind of bother me. I don’t like being amongst a lot of people anymore. I don’t like the parking at venues or the waiting in a crowd or the 2 1/2 hour drive there and back. So “plans” as it were need to be spread out over the course of at least a month or two.

If we’d realized how close these shows were we probably wouldn’t have bought the Gaffigan tickets. They popped up back in April and my wife texted me about it and wanted to know if I wanted to go. I was like, “Sure! Why not!?”, not realizing that the Mulaney tickets I bought for her for Christmas were the very same weekend.

This doesn’t happen very often. Last time this happened was back in 2024. I think we went to at least 9 concerts that summer. We even missed out on one because it was too damn hot to stand outside(it was the Van Halen tour with Hagar, Satriani, Anthony, and I think Aronoff.) It was like 98 degrees and we weren’t gonna be doing that.

These are first world problems, I know. And we do still have Sunday to relax, so all is sort of well. I’m just a curmudgeon who is set in his ways. We’ll have fun, I’m sure. And the Gaffigan tickets ended up being an 80th birthday present for my dad, so it’s worth the extra “plans” as it were.

Regardless, I think I’ll need a weekend for my weekend.
