Gloomy Monday

It was a great weekend. Saturday was pretty quiet, just did some grocery shopping, my wife and I got lunch, and we made taco pizza for dinner. Enjoyed a couple fall-ish beers and spun some records. We watched the movie Good Fortune with Keanu Reeves, Aziz Ansari, and Seth Rogan. It was a decent watch. Funny.

Sunday my wife and I headed down to Indianapolis to catch brunch with the Indy Hubners. Our 23-year old had to work so she couldn’t make unfortunately. Brunch was delicious, and afterwards we headed to the Indianapolis Arts Center and saw some truly amazing pieces in the many different galleries they have. We all ended up taking poochers Dot and Ryleigh for walks on the trails near the art center. We got to see where the water had flooded all along the White River shoreline a couple weeks ago. I couldn’t imagine what that would have looked like with the water only a foot or so underneath the bridge. Kind of horrifying.

So after a great weekend like that you’d think I’d feel pretty good rolling into another work week. Alas, that’s not the case. I think partly why I’m just kind of in a bummer mood is the weather. Dreary, rainy day with a hefty dose of humidity hanging in the air. Barometric Pressure Blues, I suppose(was that a Howlin’ Wolf song?) Yesterday was kind of half and half in terms of clouds/sun mix, but there was enough sunshine moments and hanging with the kids that made things seem alright.

Maybe it’s just that reminder of how old everyone is getting. How mature and adult my kids are now. Our oldest has been out of the house pretty much since they were 16 when they finished their junior and senior year of high school at the Indiana Academy down at Ball State. They’d be home for summer and holidays, but them moving out for good on their own back in February of 2024 wasn’t nearly as heavy as it could have been.

I do miss having my son around. When he and his girlfriend moved to Indy so she could attend college that was pretty hard for me. I suppose it still is on a certain level. He’s always been my movie pal; from Marvel and DC to horror films we were there together. Sometimes my wife and his siblings came along, but most of the time it was us seeing films together. My 23-year old likes horror movies as well, so she’ll go with me when she’s not working. My wife? Well, not a horror movie fan. And really, I’ve kind of lost my interest in comic book movies. They don’t hold the appeal that they once did when I could share that excitement with my son.

And don’t get me wrong, I’m very proud of my son for stepping out on his own. He works two jobs to make ends meet and doesn’t complain. He and his girlfriend are doing the work to get to where they want to be. It’s gotten easier for me not having them around, but once in a while I can’t help but get a little wistful about “the old days.”

I think mostly, though, I’m in a bit of a funk because my heart catheterization is Thursday. I’m not scared or fearful, but you can’t help but have a little bit of anxiousness or trepidation knowing they’re going to run a tube up a vein and go rummaging through your heart. I already got the great news a couple weeks ago that I’m recovered from the heart failure, as my heart is back pumping like a champ. The heart cath is because they found some plaque in the old ventricles and want to get a better look at it. If they decide I need heart stents they’ll put them in then. They don’t put me completely out for this either. They told me they would “make me comfortable”, whatever that means. A VR set showing me a sunny beach with noise-cancelling headphones would definitely make me comfortable, so I don’t realize where I’m at. That won’t happen, but a fella can dream.

Gaea the Great

Anyways, it was a fantastic weekend which led into a gloomy Monday. Rest of the week is supposed to be super muggy and in the 90s, so there’s that. Good Labor Day weekend to just recuperate indoors and watch some movies, spin some records, and maybe work on some music.

    1. Happy Anniversary to you and Jennifer. It’s hard to be happy when you feel so heavy, but try to enjoy the two of you. The sun will return eventually. Always does.
