Burning Tapes Drops Surprise “Odds On Evil”

If you tuned into my conversation with Darren Page a couple weeks ago you’d know that he has a brand new BurningTapes album just waiting to drop and blow your minds. The co-runner of Burning Witches Records and mastermind behind the electronic project BurningTapes wrote and recorded this new LP over the last couple years with help from Damon Baxter(Deadly Avenger). Devil x Nine is unlike anything Page has released before, and I can tell you it’s going to blow your minds. Serious drum n bass album with plenty of desert rock and hip hop vibes, combined with 70s exploitation grime for good measure.

Thanks to delays at pressing plants the album drop has been delayed slightly, but that’s not going to stop this party. In order to satiate our appetites for fuzzy bass and hip hop beats, as well as commemorate his 40th year on this rock, Darren Page has dropped a single for us to get our funk on with.

“Odds On Evil” is a slap in the face, a kick in the teeth, and a throat punch of buzzing fuzz rock and gnarly riffage of the highest order. Imagine Josh Homme eating ‘shrooms and getting lost in Beastie Boys’ Check Your Head on a $50 boom box in the California desert. Or Odeley-era Beck time-traveling back to 1972 to score some Roger Corman biker flick. That’s the vibe Page is snagging on this killer tune.

There’s also a great b-side called “A-TYPE Noise(Band Version)” that goes for a more low key vibe. Early 2000s indie rock groove on display, with a nod to bands like Spoon and Interpol. Just another example of the shift in sonics and sound that Burning Tapes is taking here.

Darren Page said this about the single release:

I just wanted to mark the day really and as manufacturing got delayed on the new album, I thought I’d record a new track instead and make it free. Just a thank you and a heads up that more is imminent.

So to celebrate Mr. Page’s 40th birthday you should head over the Burning Witches’ Bandcamp page and download “Odds On Evil” right away. Put it in your head and let the magic of fuzzy bass lines and distorted beats take you over. And wish Darren Page a rockin’ 40th.

Listen to “Odds On Evil” below. Devil x Nine will be out soon, so keep up with all the info over at Burning Witches Records.

Yes, all of this, and also Trent Reznor overseeing the project in a bad mood. LOL
