Out With False Fall…In With Real Fall

Friday is here, finally. And with it comes the true beginning of fall weather. We’ve had a few days here and there of mild temps -including upper 50s and low 60s for highs- but those temps were short-lived. We’d head back up into the upper 70s and 80s with all the humidity you could ever want. This seemed to wreak havoc on my allergies for weeks on end. Massive pressure in my head and just a general sense of misery. I’ve grown a disdain for summer weather and the atmospheric dumpster fire it brings with it.

Well, for the past few days all of that has lifted. Sure, it was still pretty warm at the beginning of the week. I broke a serious sweat on some of the post-work walks I took the dog on, but my sinuses felt relatively clear. For the past two mornings I’ve woken to temps in the 40s and that was alright, alright, alright. And this weekend there’s supposed to be a dramatic shift with a cold front coming in; high winds, overcast skies, and starting Saturday night about 24 hours of rain, rain, rain. With the massive Dune-like clouds of dried dirt in the air from all the farmers plowing their fields for the winter that rain is a much welcome reprieve from the dust bowl conditions.

Colder weather, I’m ready for you.

My attitude has improved immensely with the oncoming cooler temps and fall-like conditions. I’ll be 52 in less than two months and I can say with much certainty that I’m a fall/winter person. I’m not a fan of heat. Not since we as a planet disintegrated the ozone layer thanks to aerosol cans of White Rain being used on the regular in the 80s(thanks, Sunset Strip.) Now, even temps in the mid-70s are barely manageable thanks to nearly zero protection from the sun’s rays. If you took what 75 degrees felt like in 1985 compared to what it feels like in 2025 I think you would be generally shocked. Those sunbeams are oppressive, man.

Now, if you’re outside at the beach or mowing the lawn or playing a game of baseball at the park you may not notice as much. Those situations you’re supposed to be hot and sweaty(and hopefully you’ve covered up with some SPF-30). It’s when you want to take a leisurely walk in the park, or you’re walking from your car to the grocery store where you notice that damn heat. It just feels hotter, man. Not Florence Pugh or Sure Thing-era Daphne Zuniga hot, but can’t fall asleep or sun beating you in the face in the car hot.

All of this to say that I’m extremely happy and excited for real fall to arrive. I spent two hours outside yesterday cleaning up the yard of it’s pine needle blanket, the second time I’ve done this in a week and a half. And there will be plenty more where that came from until probably the first of December. And you know what? I’m fine with that. I ran the mower as well, and as long as it doesn’t shoot back up into the 70s and 80s that should only happen a couple more times.

We are two weeks away from Halloween, which is also something to be excited for. I’ve been watching quite a few movies on Shudder leading up to it. V/H/S: Halloween was great, as was Night of the Reaper. Bring Her Back was very good and disturbing. There have been some stinkers as well, but that’s the name of the game when it comes to horror film season.

Music-wise there’s two big ones dropping today. Tame Impala’s Deadbeat and Makaya McCraven’s Off The Record. I’m currently listening to Deadbeat and I wasn’t all that excited about it, as I wasn’t much of a fan of the first single “End of Summer”. A sparse, 7-minute techno jam wasn’t really what I was excited about in terms of new Tame Impala. The next two singles “Loser” and “Dracula” were better, but I’m missing the melody-driven psych rock of Innerspeaker and Lonerism. I’m over halfway through the album and I’m enjoying it a bit more. Hearing it all together, and it is a very techno-centric record, it feels more like a journey. Still not completely my jam, but it’s growing on me. My wife and daughter are seeing them in Chicago at the beginning of November. That will be the second time they’ve seen them, following a March of 2022 show in Tennessee.

The weekend is going to be pretty loose. No set plans other than one of my oldest friends is coming over Saturday night to hang out. We haven’t seen him in over year, though I do talk to him on the regular via messaging. It’ll be good to see him.

Well guys, if you celebrate fall I hope you have a fantastic fall weekend. Enjoy it. I’ll be basking in the crisp temps and chilly rainfall. And if you’re going for a trail walk, be sure to bundle up. Might be a little cool out there.
