I’ve been making a concerted effort to watch horror movies this month. Every weekend I’ve been watching something horror-adjacent. The last few years I feel like I’ll watch a couple movies and that’s it. I mean, what kind of horror fan am I if I’m only watching a couple spooky movies during the spookiest time of the year? Not much of one, that’s what I say.
I’ve got Shudder and Hulu, which are both great spots to catch horror movies and shows. Amazon Prime does get stuff as well, but you have to look a little harder. I’ve had Shudder since November of 2018. That’s when Graham Reznick’s series Dead Wax premiered. It’s definitely not for everyone, but if you’re one of those folks that it does appeal to you’ll love it. What sorts of things do you need to enjoy to dig Dead Wax? Vinyl collecting, David Lynch, cursed objects, weirdo characters, and of course the actress Hannah Gross.
Ever since then I’ve made Shudder my go-to spot for new, old, weird, and bad horror. It’s worth the price of admission just for the In Search Of Darkness docu-series. They cover all the weird and forgotten horror of the 80s. Stuff that was bad then and still bad now, but in the best way possible. Each movie in the series is like 4 hours long, so they cover LOTS of ground. But besides that you’ve got the new Creepshow series, Channel Zero, and lots of Shudder original flicks. Skinamarink, Glorious, Speak No Evil, Revealer, Brooklyn 45, Deadstream, The Mortuary Collection, and the V/H/S horror anthology series just to name a few.
Here’s a list of what I’ve watched the last three weekends:
The Boogeyman
V/H/S 85
Creepshow Season 2&3
Death Spa
Totally Killer
Friday The 13 : The Final Chapter
There have also been a few like Elevator Game and Appendage that I started and didn’t quite finish because, well, they weren’t that great(I’ll probably finish Appendage as it wasn’t too terrible.) But hey, that’s the risk you take with horror. You win some, you lose some. Plus, I know there have been more I’m just not remembering them at the moment(another risk you take when you’re older and you don’t write stuff down.)
I highly recommend The Boogeyman as it’s a solid scare flick with great acting and some seriously insane creature design, and V/H/S 85 if horror anthologies are your thing. I think I’m going to do my annual Romero Dawn of the Dead viewing this weekend. It’s tradition, man. And it’s also one of my favorite movies of any genre. I might rent that new Exorcist flick as well. We shall see.
I’m making an effort to fill my brain with slashers, creepers, and oozing fright. I have to keep telling myself my 14-year old me would freak out with so much horror available at his fingertips. I can’t let that kid down. No sir.
