The air feels a little heavier than it should. There’s a sense of doom and gloom all around, covering the view like a low hung fog. Thick as split pea soup, it seems to cover any chance of seeing what lies ahead. I’m living in a time that me 20 years ago could not even imagine, politically and socially speaking. There’s no cut and dry when it comes to outcomes, polls, results, etc….as a large chunk of our population are victims of the magical “me” thinking. That no matter what reality is, you can shape it into whatever you like and it’s going to be the new truth.
Politics has become nothing more than just another “entertainment”; WWF in suits and on news channels and podcasts. It’s become more so just a pick your favorite character and back ’em no matter how awful they are. Go with the big personality that likes to be cruel to those underneath him and even crueler to those above him. And if you don’t agree with their point-of-view then berate them and threaten revenge.
That makes for a hell of a WWF villain.
But with the reality of our existence and of politics, we’re not backing faces and heels to use wrestling terms. We’re dealing with real people running for real offices that will make laws that affect us all as humans living in this country. We are dealing with the person that has access to the Nuclear codes and the means to use them. We’ve already heard threats from one of the candidates that they would possibly use military force against those that oppose him. We’ve heard Nazi rhetoric, how smart some dangerous political leaders are, and their intent to roll back things like the Affordable Care Act. And if you’re a woman, LGBTQ+, a person of color, or not a Bible-thumping Christian than you can look forward to a scary four years of making things great again.
I know who I’m voting for, without a doubt. I’ve known who I wouldn’t vote for since 2016 when he was on the ballot the first time. It’s not that I think this person is evil or dangerous. It’s that I know those that want him in office so they can pull his strings are. There’s something dark and menacing that’s lingering behind the curtains we’re not allowed to look behind, and I feel that if they get to go to the White House again with the Real Estate “mogul” I think some seriously bad things could happen.
I’m voting for who I’m voting for not because I’m a hardliner either way, but instead I’m voting for the person that I feel would cause the least damage to groups of individuals in this country that are the most vulnerable. I’m voting for the person that doesn’t call people “stupid”, “suckers”, or “shit vice presidents” while on the campaign trail. I’m voting for the person who isn’t obsessed with how many people are in their crowd. I’m voting for who I’m voting for based on what seems like genuine interest in making American lives better, as opposed to running on the promise of revenge.
This isn’t an attempt to sway anyone’s opinion. This is simply me putting out into the interwebs how I’m feeling going into this day. I’m feeling squirrely and anxious, and not hopeful. Because I feel like 20 years ago someone running for office that would espouse their admiration for Nazis, Vladimir Putin, or being impressed with Xi Jinping and his ruling with an iron fist would have been laughed off any political ticket. And probably ostracized for the rest of their lives. Instead, people adore him and think he’s the literal return of Christ(I know…wow.)
At the very least, I hope people can cast their ballots in a peaceful manner without feeling threatened. And regardless of who you’re voting for. You can vote for whomever you want between these two candidates. That’s the great thing about this country. You have a choice. And it’s your own, private choice. Nobody has to know who you voted for. I’m looking at the wives of these super religious nuts that feel it’s their duty to control their wives’ lives. The ones that aren’t comfortable at all with voting for a hedonistic, spoiled brat bully that never worked a day in his life. When you’re in that voting booth, it’s just you and whatever higher power you believe in. Vote with your heart, not because it’s who your husband or Pastor tell you to vote for.
Just let those in line with you stand in peace, as well as those working the polls. Let them do their jobs and don’t be assholes to them.
For those going to the polls with their red hats and giant flags flapping on the backs of their pick up trucks, check and see where those items were made. Were they made by Americans in American businesses? Or were they made in China. I bet I know. And I bet you probably don’t even care.
Says a lot.
Go vote, whether you think it’s pointless or not. Whether you think it even makes a difference. Because it does. It’s not the person you would have chose? Yeah, same here. But do you want another four years with the guy with 34 convictions and loves a good dictator? Neither do I.
Stay frosty, America.
