I Could Use Some New Boards Of Canada Right About now

Last Boards of Canada album came out in 2013. It’s been 11 years since Tomorrow’s Harvest arrived and gave me hope for the future of electronic music. It was the first BoC album to come out since I’d gotten into them, which was 2008. Before that the last new full-length Boards album was 2005s The Campfire Headphase, so when Tomorrow’s Harvest was announced it felt like a monumental event to me. It had been 8 years since any new BoC(unless you count 2006s Trans Canada Highway, as you should.)

Tomorrow’s Harvest has sustained me for a long time, but after 11 years I need new music from one of my favorite bands. Something about their downtempo music connects with me on a very visceral level; the nostalgia of the old sounds, the melancholy synths, the low key dance grooves, and above all else that hazy dream world their music seems to build in front of your eyes is a place I visit often and love with much reverence.

So how about it Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin, will you bless our ears with new sound worlds and low key psychedelic grooves in 2024?

Well until something happens in the BoC camp, I’ll just dig into this collection of unreleased tracks from what I’m guessing is a bootleg set called A Few Old Tunes. I somehow stumbled upon it on Youtube and it’s been satiating my BoC appetite so far this morning. In fact, I was feeling kind of bummed out to start out today but this set has “turned my frown upside down”, as it were. There’s some seriously amazing tracks in this set that I’m shocked were never released officially. “Forest Moon” is punching all the right buttons for me. Classic BoC vibes, which in my mind elicit nostalgia, sadness, and the existential passing of time which is really just the slow march to death.

So if you’re a fan like me, check out the Youtube video below. 70 minutes of lo fi, melancholy goodness. And hey, if you’re reading this and you know something I don’t about some new Boards of Canada coming down the pike drop me some info below.

Happy cycling, and Happy Friday.
