It took me a long time to warm up to Ty Segall. Years. Maybe a decade. Manipulator was when I came on board. That album, plus his interview with Marc Maron where he talked about skateboarding on acid. I thought, “You know, I think I might like this kid now.”
Since then I’ve come to appreciate the guy, his work ethic, and his unwavering drive to create. He puts out at least two albums a year. Typically one under his own name plus a side project(i.e. Fuzz, Sic Alps, Surgery Channel, Wasted Shirt, etc…). The guy is a music machine, and apparently he really likes hard-boiled eggs or Cool Hand Luke(or both.)
Back in August Segall released single “Void”, which is a trippy, psychedelic song that tows the line between late 60s Paisley freak out and early 90s college rock in the spirit of Polvo and Pavement. Very groovy song with great harmonies and an ominous vibe overall. We now have “Eggman”, and despite its title it is not an ode to the Beatles’ “I Am The Walrus”. It is, however, the kind of weird and wonky track you’d expect from a hard-boiled egg overdose. And no, I’m not yolking.
Segall has always shown affection and admiration for the weird and out there. Give his side project Wasted Shirt a listen. That’s his project with Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale and it’s noisy and alien and corrupt in all the best ways. And Henry Rollins liner notes should be framed and hung in the Smithsonian. “Eggman” starts out with a Segall-worthy groove. As the song moves on it seems to be slowing down ever so slightly, as if we’re running out of steam(or the acid is beginning to kick in.)

The video, directed by Segall’s wife Denée Segall, simply shows Ty sitting at a table in front of a glass bowl full of hard-boiled eggs and eating them one by one. A cowboy hat, cowboy shirt, and red rouge on his cheeks adds an air of David Lynchian absurdism.
I love that Ty Segall makes what he wants, when he wants, with whomever he wants and on his own terms. And he’s got a great relationship with Drag City Records that allows him to do that with a certain amount of distribution power. And, I just love this crazy California kid who seemingly has an endless pool of creativity he can dive into and make music with such confidence and utter abandon. He’s kind of a brilliant musical weirdo.
Watch “Eggman” below, then go dive into Ty’s catalog. It’s worth the trip, man.
