El Paraiso Records Returns With Rude Skøtt Osborne Trio’s ‘The Virtue Of Temperance’, Out Early 2022; Listen To “L’Ombra Blu”

Back in 2020 the team of Martin Rude & Jakob Skøtt, aka Martin Rude & Jakob Skøtt Duo, released two incredible LPs. The Discipline of Assent and The Dichotomy of Control were these sonically dense sound worlds that felt dusty as a dystopian western; buzzing strings, forward-thinking percussion, and wonky electronics that gave the proceedings just the right amount sci-fi intellectual heft. Yet there was also an almost jazz fusion quality to the freedom and scope of these two records.

Rude and Skøtt are stellar musicians, and can seemingly do anything. Rude is a multi-string instrumentalist, as well as lead singer for Sun River and stand-in bass player for Causa Sui. Jakob Skøtt is drummer extraordinaire for Causa Sui, has played in a ton of projects under the El Paraiso Records umbrella, as well as creating the label’s visual aesthetic.

These two musicians are back and they’ve brought along multi-wind instrumentalist and composer Tamar Osborn. The Virtue of Temperance will be arriving early 2022, but until then have a taste with “L’Ombra Blu”.

If you’re familiar with the Duo’s sonic world, then Rude Skøtt Osborn Trio has expanded that sound world to almost widescreen proportions. A little on Tamar Osborn; she is the creative force behind modal jazz ensemble Collocutor (On The Corner Records). She is a long-standing member of the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra, performs and collaborates regularly with Sarathy Korwar, Jessica Lauren, Emanative, Ill Considered and DJ Khalab, and is an in-demand session musician.

What she’s bringing to the Rude/Skøtt world is a sense of scope and cosmic vibes. Her flute and saxophone work on “L’Ombra Blu” is otherworldly, adding to the already spaced-out vibes of the guitar, drums, and electronics. I’m reminded of Get Up With It-era Miles, as well as the Latin vibes of Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd’s Jazz Samba. There’s a darkness, but not a malignant one. Just a mysterious world that I’m eager to explore more of.
