It’s been almost 4 years since Kevin Parker graced us with a new Tame Impala record. Currents dropped in the summer of 2015 to staggering praise and much success. It was by and large Kevin Parker’s biggest musical moment since the skinny Perth music wunderkind first stumbled onto the music scene at the end of the 2000s.
So what has Parker been doing since then? Lots of production, remixes, guest spots, and general musical Zelig-ing with lots and lots of musical big shots like Mark Ronson, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Travis Scott, and I’m sure many other I could care a less about.
Point is, Kevin Parker keeps busy. Thankfully he’s also been busy writing and recording the fourth Tame Impala LP. No title yet, but he dropped the first single from it this week. “Patience” seems to be sticking with the sonic road map of Currents, giving us an early 80s shot of pop radio bliss. Parker is determined to create his own brand of pop music that both tweens and stoned adults can agree on.
I’m not saying this one is blowing me away, but it has “grower” potential. I could see it being that pleasant track you run into amidst a record full of hazy Impala psych/pop/rock/dance/funk/white guy soul. It’s no “Let It Happen”, but we’ll simmer in it for a bit and see what happens.
