Singer/songwriter Lauren Lakis is readying the follow-up to her highly-acclaimed debut album FEROCIOUS. Sad Girl Breakfast will be dropping 4/5/19 on Cavity Search Records. First single “Right Now” is out, and it’s a stunning song.
Hints of late-80s and early-90s shoegaze, dream pop, and slowcore come thru on the baritone guitar-driven track. Lakis’ vocals are sweet, sullen, and melancholy which adds to the tracks darkly romantic vibes. Everything from Mazzy Star, Cocteau Twins, and Lush come to mind; as well as more contemporary artists like Young Prisms, Beach House, and Melody’s Echo Chamber. It’s a densely-layered song that hints at pop confections hidden under a serious psychedelic, kaleidoscopic sound.

Leading single ‘Right Now’ is about the heaviness of the present moment, the constant energy required to operate in the here and now, how simple existing can be such a struggle sometimes. Lakis explains, “Malaise is the word that probably best describes that feeling. But it’s also suggesting that it isn’t a solitary experience, and that we can find comfort in each other”. Tinted with melancholy the single features, haunting vocals, dreamy psych rock soundscapes and gritty organic instrumentation. Written whilst attending a seance in an old dungeon whilst on tour in Washington state, the track is evidently inspired by the location of its conception. The visuals for ‘Right Now’ asks the question: why be a sad girl on Earth when you can be a sad girl in space?
