Hare Tarot Lies

POP Montreal 2011Alright, just one more No Joy post and I won’t bug you all with them anymore….until next week.

I can’t get enough of this Canadian band of fuzz and shoegaze-loving gals.  They know their craft.  They make beautiful, noisy, and at times quite chaotic music that seems to not hit you in the face, but melt into your face slowly and find a nesting place in your brain.  They just released this pretty awesome video for one of Wait To Pleasure’s highlights “Hare Tarot Lies”.  Seems the tagline to this video should’ve been ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’.  It’s nice to see music videos like this.  Ones that make you cringe and also make you want to grab a beer out of the fridge and inject Windex into your neck as well.

Remember back in the 80s and 90s when videos were a part of the music culture?  People took pride in making something visually stunning to go with their music?  I do.  It was called MTV.  It was a time when you could see Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” one minute, then the very next video would be Art of Noise’s “Close(To The Edit)”.  It was weird and wonderful.  Bands do continue to make interesting videos, and this one is one of the good ones.

  1. Exactly the right video for the song.

In closing, at the risk of exposing myself as a terminally immature dork, … Phwoarrr!! Hubba, hubba!

    1. Do they make you re-evaluate your stance on the whole shoegaze thing? At the very least if they hit Manchester on a UK tour would you head out to see ’em?

      Hubba, hubba, indeed.

      1. No I just don’t quite get it I’m afraid, it’s intricate, moody and technical, but it doesn’t quite tweak my pleasure centres I’m afraid.

I do own ‘Hypocrite’ by Lush on clear vinyl, if you’d like it?

      2. I’m not sure I’ve heard that one. I’d gladly take Spooky off your hand. Once I check it out I just might.

I just had to give you a hard time about the whole shoegaze thing. Your musical tastes are diverse as I’ve ever seen. You can go from Fela Kuti to Faster Pussycat in seconds flat. That’s impressive. Mighty impressive, sir.

      3. It was a single from ‘Spooky’ I think.

I think I’m just missing the shoegaze gene, although several things I like do come close; although not Faster Pussycat. I once held a door open for the guitarist in Ride, does that help?
